The Story of Vintage Triumph Motorcycles

Triumph motorcycles have their own place in the hearts of hard-core bikers, as you will discover by reading this Triumph motorcycles articles. These brash Brits had a look of bold confidence and backed it up with race-winning speed that befit the legends road them.

The British 1998 Triumph Thunderbird sport motorcycle was a combination of retro-triumph styling elements and modern mechanicals. Among the array of models offered by the revived new Triumph company was the semi-sport thunderbird. Wearing little more than a bikini fairing and streamlined tail piece, it bridge the gap between the sleek Daytona sport bike and the standard Trident.

Bearing a name resurrected from Triumph models of the 1950s, the 1998 Triumph Thunderbird sport carried many styling elements from the company’s past life. The shape, lettering, and striping of the fuel tank mimicked those from the 1970s, and the air cleaner and side covers also looked like those found on Triumphs of old.

On the mechanical side, however, it was a different story. While a three cylinder engine was also used in the Trident of the 1970s, the one powering the Thunderbird was larger (885 cc versus 750 cc), water cooled rather than air cooled (though it still sported fins), and was of modern double overhead design rather than the old overhead valve layout. Spoked wheels held dual 12 inch disc brakes in front, a single 11 inch disc in the rear braking power the old Triumphs could only dream of.

The 1998 Triumph T595 motorcycle was parts of Triumph resurgence in the 1990s, though this resurgence was admittedly in name only, the original Triumph motorcycle company was long gone, as was the fabled factory at Meridan. The 1998 Triumph T959 was a match for the world’s best motorcycles and quickly became reborn Triumph best seller. These bikes were powered by water-cooled triples and fours displacing 750 cc to 1200 cc, and included standard, sport, touring, and eventually dual-purpose models.

The most sporting of the new Triumph were the 750 cc three cylinder and 1000 cc four cylinder Daytona. Wrapped in sleek bodywork, they were powerful enough, but taller and heavier than their Japanese rivals. That all changed in 1997.

With the introduction of the T595 that year, Triumph was back in the game. This revised Daytona sported a 995 cc fuel injection triple in new alloy frame, and the combination proved potent. And Though the Triumph name was perhaps more closely associated with standard models, the T595 quickly became the marques best seller.
